This is a press release from College of the Redwoods:
The Seven Gill Shark Review, College of the Redwoods’ literary magazine, is currently accepting submissions of original poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction from Humboldt County community members, as well as staff, faculty, and students at the CR Eureka campus. Entrants must be at least 14 years old to submit work. The submission period is currently open and will be through noon on March 24, 2021.
Submissions must be submitted electronically. They must be typed and may consist of up to three pieces of work, but no more than one prose piece. Short stories or creative nonfiction pieces are limited to 2500 words and should be double-spaced with pages numbered. Entries should be emailed to [email protected] (See our website for details on how to do this at https://www.redwoods.edu/Events/PoetsWriters and look under Submit Your Fiction or Prose.)
Among those whose work is accepted, the first place poem and the first place story will receive prizes of $100, which is generously funded by the College of the Redwoods Foundation; second place will receive $25 gift certificates (the poetry prize is generously sponsored by Northtown Books of Arcata; the prose prize is sponsored by Booklegger Books of Eureka). There is a $100 prize for creative nonfiction sponsored by North Coast Mensa members.
In addition, all writers whose work is accepted are eligible to be considered for the Hobson Award, which is a $250 award given to the best entry in any genre that builds bridges between species, religions, cultures, ages, or genders. These prizes are for both campus and community members, though not for faculty or staff of College of the Redwoods. All authors whose work is accepted will have their work published on the Seven Gill Shark Review website.
