No extension of lockdown in Bengaluru, says BBMP commissioner

There was no question of extending the ongoing week-long lockdown here set to end on July 22, newly appointed commissioner of the city civic body N Manjunatha Prasad said on Sunday, amid speculations it may be continued for another fortnight in view of rising cases.

The government has imposed complete lockdown in Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural districts among a few others since 8 pm of July 14 till 5 am on July 22.

Seven held for selling Remdesivir injections at higher cost

Seven persons have been arrested in Mumbai for allegedly selling Remdesivir injections being used in treatment of COVID-19 at a higher price, a police official said on Sunday.

The accused were selling a vial of the injection for Rs 30,000, much higher than the MRP of Rs 5,400, he said.

Officials of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and crime branch also recovered stock of Remdesivir injection after raiding two places in the city on Saturday, he said.

Odisha’s COVID-19 crosses 17,000-mark; death toll mounts to 91

Odisha’s COVID-19 caseload crossed the 17,000-mark on Sunday with 736 more people testing positive for the infection, while five fresh fatalities pushed the death toll due to the disease in the state to 91, a health official said.

The fresh cases reported from 25 districts have taken the state’s COVID-19 tally to 17,437, he added. Of the 736 new cases, 481 were reported from quarantine centres, while the remaining 255 are contacts of COVID-19 patients, the official said.

Puducherry reports 109 new COVID-19 cases, overall tally inches towards 2,000

Puducherry on Sunday reported 109 fresh COVID-19 cases, pushing the overall tally in the union territory to 1,999.

A spokesman of the Department of Health and Family Welfare told PTI that the total number of active cases stood at 817 after 92 patients were discharged in last 24 hours. A total of 1,154 patients have been treated and discharged so far, he added.

The total number of COVID-19 cases went up to 1,999 with the addition of the 109 fresh infections.

Total lockdown in Arunachal’s Capital Complex extended till August 3

The Arunachal Pradesh government has extended the total lockdown in the Capital Complex for another two weeks in the wake of the spurt in COVID-19 cases in the region, chief secretary Naresh Kumar announced on Sunday.

The restrictions, which were imposed till Monday evening, have been extended till 5 am on August 3, he said addressing a virtual press conference.

The state cabinet chaired by chief minister Pema Khandu took the decision on Friday after reviewing the scenario in the capital region, he added. Kumar said the reason it was extended for two more weeks was the surge in COVID-19 cases.

“The district administration needs more time to control the local transmission by undertaking antigen tests on all primary and secondary contacts of the COVID-19 patients, he said, justifying the extension.

BSF jawan, GSI superintendent die of COVID-19 in Meghalaya

Two more COVID-19 patients, including a BSF personnel, died at a hospital on Sunday as Meghalaya’s death toll due to the disease rose to four, officials said.

Both the patients died while undergoing treatment at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in the early hours, its director P Bhattacharyya said.

The 45-year-old BSF personnel was referred to the hospital from Tura after he started developing complications while undergoing treatment there, he said.

Pakistan’s coronavirus tally reaches 263,496

Pakistan’s coronavirus tally reached 263,496 with the detection of 1,579 new cases in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said on Sunday. Of the total COVID-19 infections, 204,276 patients have recovered so far, it said.

Forty-six more fatalities were recorded overnight, taking the nationwide coronavirus death toll to 5,568. Pakistan’s total coronavirus tally now stands at 263,496, the ministry said.

Sindh recorded the maximum number of 112,118 cases, followed by 89,793 in Punjab, 31,890 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 14,576 in Islamabad, 11,424 in Balochistan, 1,888 in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and 1,807 in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Indore COVID-19 case count crosses 6,000 mark

As many as 129 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Indore in the last 24 hours, taking the tally in Madhya Pradesh’s worst hit district to 6,035, an official said on Sunday.

There has been a rapid rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the state’s industrial hub during the last 10 days.


“Out of 1,957 samples tested in the last 24 hours, we have found 129 new patients,” Indore’s Chief Medical and Health Officer Praveen Jadia said.

Global death toll for pandemic now above 600,000

Johns Hopkins University says the global death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed 600,000.

The university’s tally as of Saturday night says the United States tops the list with 140,103 deaths. It is followed by 78,772 fatalities in Brazil and 45,358 in the United Kingdom.

2 fresh COVID-19 cases in Mizoram; count rises to 284

Two more persons have tested positive for COVID-19 in Mizoram, taking the northeastern state’s caseload to 284 on Sunday, a health official said.

The new patients are from Aizawl and they had recently returned from other states, he said.

A total of seven people from Siaha and Kolasib districts have recovered from COVID-19 and they were discharged from hospitals on Saturday, the official said, adding that the coronavirus recovery rate in the state now stands at 58.8 percent.

India’s COVID-19 tally climbs to 10,77,618, recoveries stand at 6,77,422

India saw a record single-day jump of 38,902 COVID-19 cases pushing its tally to 10,77,618 on Sunday, while the total number of recoveries increased to 6,77,422, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The death toll due to the disease rose to 26,816 with new 543 fatalities even as 23,672 patients have recuperated in the past 24 hours, the highest so far in a day, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The Ministry of Health said the 11 most COVID-19 affected countries in the world—the US, Brazil, Russia, Peru, Chile, Mexico, South Africa, the UK, Iran, Pakistan, Spain—together reported 8 times more cases and 14 times more deaths than India.

WHO reports record daily increase in global coronavirus cases for second day in a row

The World Health Organization reported a record increase in global coronavirus cases for the second day in a row, with the total rising by 259,848 in 24 hours.

The biggest increases reported on Saturday were from the United States, Brazil, India and South Africa, according to a daily report. The previous WHO record for new cases was 237,743 on Friday. Deaths rose by 7,360, the biggest one-day increase since May 10. Deaths have been averaging 4,800 a day in July, up slightly from an average of 4,600 a day in June.

The WHO reported 71,484 new cases in the United States, 45,403 in Brazil, 34,884 in India and 13,373 in South Africa.

Coronavirus News LIVE updates: 736 new COVID-19 positive cases, 607 recovered in the last 24 hours in Odisha. The total number of positive cases in the state rises to 17,437 including 11,937 recovered, said Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. 

Mexico reports 7,615 new cases of coronavirus, marking record

Mexico’s Health Ministry on Saturday posted a record for new coronavirus cases reported on a single day, with 7,615 more confirmed cases, bringing its overall tally of infections to 338,913, health ministry data showed.

The ministry also reported 578 additional fatalities, bringing the total in the country to 38,888 deaths.

The government has said the real number of infected people is likely significantly higher than the confirmed cases.

Speaking to a news conference, the Mexican government’s head of epidemiology, Jose Luis Alomia, stressed that the country must not let down its guard.

“We expect to have a long epidemic, so we have to change personal habits and protect ourselves from risk,” he said.  (Source: Reuters)

U.S. coronavirus deaths surpass 140,000 as outbreak worsens

U.S. deaths from the novel coronavirus exceeded 140,000 on Saturday as cases continued to rise in 43 out of 50 states over the past two weeks, according to a Reuters tally.

Since late June, the United States has seen a resurgence in new cases and now, six weeks later, deaths have also begun rising, according to a weekly Reuters analysis of state and county data.

America is losing about 5,000 people to the virus every week. By contrast, neighboring Canada has reported total deaths of 8,800 since the pandemic started.

In just one week, the United States records about as many deaths as the 5,600 lives Sweden has lost since the pandemic began earlier this year.

Coronavirus News LIVE updates: In the last 24 hours, 18 fresh Covid-19 cases were added taking Agra’s tally to 1,486. The recovery rate has stabilised at 82.07 per cent, which is considered encouraging. The number of active cases now is 163. The new municipal commissioner Nikhil Tikaram Funde has visited many areas in the city and directed the sanitation workers to ensure hygiene standards were met meticulously so that contamination during the rainy season could be effectively checked. 4 NDRF personnel among 10 new COVID-19 cases in Mizoram; count rises to 282

 

 

 

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have tested positive for COVID-19 in Mizoram, taking the northeastern state’s caseload to 282 on Saturday, a health official said. Five fresh cases were reported from Aizawl, three from Siaha and two from Champhai district, he said.

A total of 36 more people, including 16 women, tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours in Manipur, pushing the tally of coronavirus infected people in the state to 1,800, officials said. Of them, Ukhrul accounted for 25, followed by five in Thoubal, three in Bishnupur, two in Churachandpur and one in Jiribam district.
