Jeremy Vine to appear at Wells Festival of Literature

Submitted for publication in Mid Somerset Series Newspapers

Campaigner Gina Miller and television and radio presenter Jeremy Vine are the latest big names announced for this year’s Wells Festival of Literature.

Gina Miller brought a crucial constitutional case challenging the UK government’s authority to trigger Article 50 without parliamentary approval. Her memoir, Rise: Life Lessons in Speaking Out, Standing Tall and Leading the Way, draws on a lifetime of failures and successes in fighting injustice. Organisers  say her story assures us that one lone voice can ring out and be heard.

And after more than 30 years at the BBC, presenting Newsnight, Panorama, Crimewatch, daily Radio 2 shows and now Channel 5’s news, views and opinion daily show, there is little that Jeremy Vine has not tackled. He will present his novel of love and sacrifice, The Diver and The Lover, based on real events surrounding one of Salvador Dali’s most famous paintings in post-civil war Catalonia.

The pair will be joining authors Simon Armitage, Rachel Johnson and Michael Eavis. And Max Porter will be discussing his novel, Lanny, for the book group event.

The 2020 festival will consist of the usual gathering in Cedars Hall in Wells, Somerset, with a maximum audience of 100, combined with live streaming online of the whole festival for a wider audience.  In the event of a lockdown, authors have committed to a live streamed online event.

Advance ticket sales for ‘Friends’ will start on August 31 with public sales starting on September 7. All tickets, including live stream performances from the few self-isolated authors, are £10 for adults and £6 students.

Organisers add that, for every £10 ticket, £2.93 will go towards enabling ongoing literacy support, events and projects with poets and writers in local schools.
