New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Sixth India-Japan SAMVAD Conference on Monday, 21st December, via video conferencing. The Prime Minister said that it was an honour to address the conference and, holding that governments should keep humanism at the core of their policies, said the essence of Samvad lay in togetherness, according to a press statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

PM Modi noted that the series of conferences began five years ago with the former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe. Since then, SAMVAD had travelled from New Delhi to Tokyo, from Yangon to Ulaanbaatar, said Prime Minister Modi, adding, “In this journey, it has remained true to its fundamental objectives: to encourage dialogue and debate; to highlight our shared values of democracy, humanism, Ahimsa, freedom, and tolerance; and, to carry forward our ancient tradition of spiritual and scholarly exchanges. I would like to thank the Government of Japan for their constant support to SAMVAD.”

The Prime Minister praised the forum as it had ensured the promotion of the ideas and ideals of Lord Buddha, especially among the youth. Holding Buddhist writing to be a treasure of mankind, he proposed the creation of a library for all such traditional Buddhist literature and scriptures, stating that India would be happy to create such a facility and provide appropriate resources for it. “The great treasures of Buddhist literature and philosophy can be found in many different monasteries today, across many different countries and languages,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi declared that the library will collect digital copies of all Buddhist literature from different countries, adding, “It will not only be a depository of literature. It will aim to translate them and make them freely available for all monks and scholars of Buddhism.”

PM Modi observed that societies that are open-minded, democratic, and transparent are better suited to innovate. He said, “Global growth cannot happen between a few. The essence of Samwad is togetherness.”

The Prime Minister concluded by complimenting the organisers of the conference and wishing them success in their deliberations.
